Students Feel the Beat with Wadaiko Rindo Drumming Workshops

Nearly 300 primary school students across South Gippsland were treated to an unforgettable musical experience this November as Prom Recitals brought Wadaiko Rindo to the region for a three-day series of taiko drumming workshops.

Running from 17–19 November, the workshops reached five schools — Mirboo North, Fish Creek, Tarwin Lower, Toora, and Boolarra Primary Schools — delivering ten high-energy sessions led by acclaimed taiko drummer Toshi Sakamoto.

From the first booming strike of the drum, students were captivated. Each workshop combined rhythm, movement, focus, and teamwork, giving students a chance to learn authentic Japanese drumming techniques while experiencing the joy of playing together as an ensemble.

Teachers praised the programme for its mix of cultural learning and hands-on music-making. Students responded with enthusiasm, describing the workshops as “fun”, “really loud!”, and “the best music lesson ever”.

Karen Vincent, Schools Programme Coordinator for Prom Recitals, said the response from schools has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Taiko drumming is an incredible way for students to build confidence, coordination, and teamwork. Seeing them so engaged and excited was a highlight of the year.”

The workshops also strengthened community connections, showcasing Prom Recitals’ commitment to bringing high-quality arts experiences to young people in regional areas.

Prom Recitals is currently gathering photos and feedback from participating schools and hopes to offer similar opportunities in future years.
